'Be supported, feel supported - make a difference'

Hi Everyone

Welcome to Year 5

Your teachers will continue to be Mrs Bevan, Miss Stanley, Mr Walker and Mrs Barlow.

We will have two PE lessons a week. These will take place on a Tuesday and Thursday. One will be rounders which will take place outside and the other will be athletics which will also be outside, weather dependent. It will be weather dependent as to which lesson is done on which day, so it is important that children come to school prepared for outdoor PE on both a Tuesday and Thursday.

I've attached a copy of the knowledge organiser - this document will let you know what the children will be learning in class this half term. It will also give you some helpful pieces of information to support your home learning/homework.

A link to this year's consent form is below - please complete it as soon as possible.

Consent form

Music

Your child will continue to have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument in school on a Monday. If your child has brought the instrument home, they must make sure they have it in school on a Monday. If they continue to forget their instruments, they will be asked to keep it in school rather than take it home.

Reading:

Your child will be expected to read each night and for this to be recorded in their reading response book. I will be checking reading response books daily and children who haven’t read at least 4 times a week will be asked to stay in during break time to read. Please remember their response book must be signed by an adult. It is just as important to discuss a book either predicting what you think might happen based on clues in the blurb or the front cover as well as listening to your child read. I attached some sentence stems in their homework folders last term, remember these are good prompts for discussion. If you spend 15/20 minutes discussing a book or a main character one night that counts as reading time and can be noted in their response book.

Homework:

Homework will be an online task set on Atom Prime each week. The effort that has been shown in homework, is slipping. If your child produces work that has been rushed then they might be asked to redo it in their own time over a lunchtime. Finally, they will have times tables and spelling practice to complete too. Homework will be set on a Thursday and be expected to be returned the following Wednesday.

 This term our topics are:

English: We will be writing a balanced argument and a dilemma narrative based on the book "King Kong".

During our reading time we will use a combination of Poetry, Non-Fiction and high quality Fiction texts to develop our reading skills all based around Other Cultures and Traditions.

Maths: Decimals, Negative Numbers and Converting Units

Science: Living things and their habitats

French: Talking about sports and how often we do them

Art: Textiles-Batiking

PSHE: Enterprise and Inclusion

MEDICATION

If your child needs prescribed medication we will require parental consent via email to the office. Contact school in advance of the start date to request the paperwork which can be emailed directly to you or made available for you to pick up. We will only be able to administer the medication upon receiving this completed information. Please provide the medication in the original box that has the child’s name and date of birth printed at the pharmacy.

ILLNESS ·

If your child is unwell, please keep them at home and seek a test if they are showing COVID 19 symptoms. Children will need to remain at home until they are well. · If your child has COVID 19 symptoms, they must be tested and remain at home. If the result is negative, they can return to school when they are feeling better and symptom-free. · If a child requires regular paracetamol, they must remain at home. · If your child becomes unwell in school, we will contact you straight away and ask you to collect your child within the hour. · Children with COVID 19 symptoms will be isolated in our medical room.

BEHAVIOUR POLICY

Our school values will continue to form the basis of our expectations, teaching and new routines. 'Be supported, feel supported' · Safety and sensitivity to the needs of others · Understanding · Pride · Patience · Ownership · Respect · Trust · Enjoyment · Determination If a child chooses not to follow the expectation of being safe, e.g. hygiene routines, it may be necessary to speak to parents.

CONTACTING SCHOOL

Parents/carers will not be able to access the school building. If you need to get in touch, please ring or email the school office. Ensure your child is equipped with all that is needed for the school day. If there is a forgotten item e.g. lunchbox, water bottle it will have to remain at home. We are trying to reduce footfall as much as physically possible and this includes staff outside of bubbles. Please do not be offended if you arrive at school later with said items – we suggest you phone first to see if there is the need or for alternative arrangements to be made.
