Autumn - Creative Curriculum

We  have made an amazing start to Year 1.

We learnt all about the weather, expanded our number, writing and phonics skills and learnt to read new and exciting texts!

In English we read two books, Rapunzel and Major Glad Major Dizzy. These were great and we wrote letters, stories and character descriptions.

In Maths we looked at numbers to 10, we learnt how to add and subtract, write number sentences, how to compare numbers and how to use symbols to show greater than, less than and equal to.

In Science we learnt about materials, we looked at how different materials are made... did you know some are man made and some are natural? We carried out experiments to find out which materials are waterproof. We also learnt all about the weather and watched as the weather changed throughout Autumn into Winter.

In phonics we have been learning lots of new sounds and words which means we can write even better sentences with our new vocabulary.

In Geography and History we learnt about our local area, we went to see a local landmark - Beeston Castle and learnt how to follow directions.

We had a great time at Beeston castle even though it was the coldest day of the year! we discovered how the people lived when the castle was first built, what jobs the castle offered and we even learnt HOW TO USE A SWORD! It was great fun.

In Art we learnt about Rodger Hargreaves, he was an author and illustrator who made the Mr Men and Little Miss book series. We made our own stories, characters and settings using watercolours and oil pastels. We also made models of Beeston castle using different paints and techniques to create texture and colours. We learnt about sliders and levers in DT and even made our Christmas cards move using a slider or lever!

We enjoyed our family lunch and showed our grown ups how we learn in a phonics lesson. We enjoyed Christmas lunch and some of us even won a book to take home for completing 100 reads in the term!

We are looking forward to learning more and more each day!
